About what Broadband is

An explanation about broadband (ADSL, Cable & Satellite)

Broadband is the name given to high speed internet access. Broadband can be delivered in a number of different methods, ADSL, Cable & Satellite.

ADSL is the form that most people receive their broadband in, with cable the next most popular method of receiving broadband. Satellite broadband is not as popular due to the costs involved, and also the main reason users would opt for Satellite broadband over other methods is if they are unable to receive broadband through the other methods, either due to the fact they live out in nowhere or too far away from their telephone exchange. Just about all of the home sin the UK can receive broadband through ADSL broadband.

Currently more broadband deals are sold than dial up packages in the UK. This is mainly down to how popular broadband has become and the low prices that it can now be got for. Prices for broadband are down to levels close to what people paid for dial up Internet

Standard broadband is 512kb and is 10 times faster than dial up Internet that is just 56k. However, broadband technology is developing fast and many broadband providers are now supplying 8mb broadband connections as standard which is a huge 160 times faster than dial up Internet

Broadband speeds are continuing to get faster and faster, there is already the ADSL2+ technology been installed that is making broadband speeds of up to 24mb! You can check your broadband speed with a broadband speed test.

Once you have tried broadband you will not want to go back, the speed difference is huge and broadband opens up so much more of the Internet that was not previously possible to look at with dial up Internet

One of the most important factors when you are choosing a broadband deal is to look at the amount of bandwidth available. Bandwidth is the amount of data that you are allowed to download/upload per month so it is worth figuring out how much you are likely to use. If you do allot of downloading music or videos then your bandwidth is going to be considerably higher than someone who just uses their Internet to read emails and surf the Internet
Another point on bandwidth to be aware of is although some broadband providers offer "unlimited bandwidth" many actually have a "fair use policy" in operation that they use to stop or restrict access to those users who they consider use excessive amounts of bandwidth. For most people these limits are sufficient but they should be monitored.
